Summer Vaca Series: Excellence Playa Mujeres

My husband Ryan and I had the opportunity to stay at the Excellence Playa Mujeres for our first anniversary. Ryan's not really a beach person, but after having experienced the all-inclusive life for our honeymoon, it was a natural fit to go back for our anniversary. At the recommendation of some friends we booked the Excellence Playa Mujeres.

We've never really been just sit on the beach and do nothing kindof vacation people—we usually wander around wherever we go and primarily explore brunch, beer (or wine, or cocktails...we're not picky), and history. We're usually pretty active when we travel, making the most of our opportunity to be in a new place. However, this resort and all-inclusives in general beg for you to take a break from the busy pace of normal life and just sit. I mean, when you have this view, can you really blame us?

I usually can't spend much time on the beach, being freakishly pale and all, but I can sit on the beach all day long when there are covered cabana beds. No freaking out over getting sunburned, having a panic attack about reapplying sunscreen every 15 minutes, and no worry of turning into a human lobster here. I was working my way through the Harry Potter series for the first time, and this was the perfect atmosphere to sit with a fantastic view and get lost in the wizarding world of Harry Potter.

When we felt like we needed a refresher from sitting in the cabana beds, we meandered across the way and sat in the poolside hammocks. It's the glory of relaxing in a hammock without being ridiculously hot—the best of both worlds!

The resort itself is incredible—the rooms are spacious, the grounds are impeccable, the food is fantastic (and there are lots of options), and the drinks are delicious (not to mention you get entire bottles of liquor in your room...how's that for a minibar?!). The Lobster House and the Chez Isabelle (French cuisine) were my favorites, with fresh lobster served (Ryan and I both ordered one alongside our dinner entrees, because vacation calories don't count, right?) poolside at the Lobster House and steak and fresh grouper served at Chez Isabelle (it was so good we ate there twice on our trip).

And did I mention the drinks? I'm not usually one for frozen beachy drinks (if I'm going for a cocktail, I'm usually a bourbon girl), but these were delicious. There were so many different flavor combinations and fresh juices they used to mix in the cocktails that I wanted to try them all! There's not much that's better than sitting on the beach with a drink in your hand.

If you haven't tried an all-inclusive resort, you won't regret it. Whether you want to sit on the beach and read a book, go for an adventure (excursions from fishing to snorkeling to visiting Mayan ruins to catamaran tours are available to book during your stay), eat new foods and drink new drinks, or just disconnect from the world and reconnect with the people you love, this is the place to do it.
